NAMI Southern Oregon
NAMI of Southern Oregon is a nonprofit affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (nami.org), the leading grassroots organization dedicated to providing education, support and advocacy for people with mental illness and their families. We are an all volunteer organization that offers help and hope for recovery.
Mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.
Mental illness affects everyone. Nearly 60 million Americans experience a mental health condition every year. Regardless of race, age, religion or economic status, mental illness impacts the lives of at least one in four adults and one in ten children across the United States.
NAMI-SO has helped hundreds of people in Jackson and Josephine Counties who are struggling with the challenges of mental illness through our Medford Resource Library, presentations, classes, support groups, partnerships and community events. Services are offered at no charge.

About There’s a Nightmare in my Closet:
This classic Tears of Joy production is performed with a variety of styles of puppets. The boy and the Nightmare are adaptations of Japanese bunraku puppets and the Jabberwocky is performed with three dimensional shadow puppets created from kitchen utensils which fuels the imagination! These stories are tied together by the theme of facing and overcoming our fears. The play addresses childhood fears in ways that will elicit both wonder and giggles.
Admission is FREE TO ALL, but you can support the Storytelling Guild by bringing a new or gently used children’s book to donate. These donations support the Guild’s Pass the Book Program, which every year gives 5,000 to 10,000 books to more than 25 agencies who work with children from newborns to older teens–agencies like Kids Unlimited, Head Start, Juvenile Detention, Community Health Centers, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Dunn House and others.
Tears of Joy Theatre is recognized as one of the nation’s outstanding puppet theatres, known internationally for its innovation and excellence. Each year the programs of the theatre serve over 200,000 children and adults. Tears of Joy Theatre has received a Washington State Governor’s Arts Award and a Young Audiences Sunburst Award for its “exemplary commitment to arts in education.” Four of the theatre’s productions have received American puppetry’s highest honor, The Citation of Excellence in the Art of Puppetry from UNIMA-USA.
